question 7

7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From our prelimery task we only had a few shots one location and two characters from that we built onto a longer clip of the film with multiple locations and multiple shots and a more advanced script. From this whole experience we have learnt new skills such as learning how to do different camera shots and bringing together a short movie in a short amount of time. We have managed to extend our imaginations and use areas around us to convey scary scenery for our film. It has helped us to use our imaginations a come up with it on our own. We had to device our own script giving us team working skills as we had to work together to come up with multiple ideas to then narrow it down to just one.

Question 2 evaluation

2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our production we portray Chloe to being a very stereotypical girl. For example when she sees the potential killers she instantly becomes scared screams and then runs away. It shows fear and as though she isn’t fighting back sticking up for herself. Although it is a horror and that would not typically happen you find that boys normally would try and be the Alfa male and protect themselves as she just runs away and does not stop. We also show her to being very dependent on her mum when she rings her from the phone and screams for her to help her. This again shows weakness something you would expect a girl to be as they are seen as the more weaker sexes.-

3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A film institution specializing in the thriller/horror genre would distribute my film due to it being the thriller/horror genre. For example Film District, a film institution that has brought out large films in the past such as Insidious, Old Boy and don’t be Afraid of the Dark. By having an industry that is more up to date with the times it can help our film be promoted to a younger age group which is what we are hoping for. However, the industry have also brought out films for an older group to also help us widen our audience age which is something that we aim to do.  However, with our group being small it would be more ideal for if we chose a smaller company such as Picturmedia who has produced small films such as Just before Dawn and War of the Planets. The idea of having a smaller industry to distribute our film would be a lot more beneficial as it would be much cheapPicture media rather than Film District.
er and easier access rather than a much larger company that is well known and would cost a lot more to get them to distribute our film. So if I was to choose one to distribute our film I would probably go for

Cinematography created in our film.

In the production process of making our film we decided to largely focus on the cinematography side.

Costume

For Jess' costume we decided she needed something bright that would stand out but not too bright like pink. We decided on a dark blue colours that could be enhanced later on in the editing stages. However we also decided she needed black to portray her introverted characteristics.

For Chloe's costume we decided she needed to be in all black or just about that with only a little bit of colour. We decided on black jeans and a black top or black coat, with possibly some white it. This would display Chloe's depression and personality. It also would show how it didn't take her long to change from the clothes she wore with the gas mask (she changed her coat).

The gas mask person needed to be in all black to show they are a villain. We also decided on the Gas mask from Millie's original story, we also added gloves to show how Chloe had planned the escapade.

Lighting

We decided on almost all natural lighting to suggest realism throughout our film. We felt like this would transfer to our audience as they would notice the verisimilitude. However in the kitchen scene we use un-naturalistic lighting to symbolize how homely it is, but also this symbolizes the falseness of Chloe's character.

Camera Shots

We used a lot of medium shots and long Shots. However we also used a crane shot to show the chase scene. These gave us variation in our shots and also makes the audience more aware of what is happening, furthermore making them enjoy it more.

1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our media product we have taken inspiration from other films that are related to our genre. Our 2 minute film shows factors of horror through tense scenes and a thrilling story line.

For example we use diegetic sound to create suspense while an image of a knife is being pulled from a bag by Chloe. The scene is done slowly again to build up tension and helping to create that thrill a horror should hold.

We became inspired by films such as Texas chainsaw massacre and Jeepers Creepers. We took inspiration from these as they are highly well known and clear examples of good horrors.

You could say that our film shows a short clip of what is yet to come. Take scream for example they show an opening clip of what it is all about giving the audience an overview of the film. Our short clip does this, it explains to the audience what it is about and explains to them what it is we are trying to show. Horrors tend to show close ups often, something we have tried to do to show not only expression but also to show the audience objects that the killer uses. That whole idea of creating suspense and horror.

Feedback on our film

Matthew Lister
Very nicely done. The shot at 0:39 sent a shiver down my spine.

Ross Walker
It fits with the genre. I like the fast editing during the chase. I like the hand held shot from behind. Kettle shot. The abrupt cut off at the end fits the genre.

Emily Spawton
Awesome short film, really well acted and filmed.

Michael White
well filmed and acted

Danny Gruff
Awesome! Well shot as well :-)

Mark Pestell
Excellent short scary film, I will never look at a gas mask in the same way again.

Hand Tutorial

We decided to make a tutorial of how we created the dead look for the hand in our film.

Pre-Raphaelite Effect

By putting on this effect we can  make it look like some parts are more fairytale than other. This not only enhances the colour but also brings out the colours of the woodland.
This will also engage the audience as they want to know why some parts look different.
By enhancing the woodland features it also gives a sense of foreboading and danger as an audience wont know what is round the corner.

Location Photos

These are the photographs of the location we're going to use. We will use different parts of the location for different scenes in the film.

Scene one: This is the scene in which the first girl to be murdered is walking down a footpath before getting lost in the woods. We will use these parts of the location for this scene to resemble a footpath, but with it being quiet we will not have to worry about getting in people's way.

These parts of the location will be used to show Jess getting lost in the woods. This is because there is a large woodland are and it will be easy to make her look isolated and scared.

This part of the location will be used to show how close the masked character is. Jess will run up the stairs past the camera and the masked character and the masked person will be stood at the other end of the bridge.

Dead Arm

The first shot of our film will be that of a rotten dead arm with etched words into the skin.

This is a basic drawn idea of what this arm could possibly look like with a view of the palm which will have etched insults in the skin.

Another example of how the dead, rotten arm could look was created with a view from the back of the hand. This works as a good example of how we wish our arm to look when we film.

Gas Mask

The gas mask

To me a gas mask is creepy hence why we have chosen to show it in our film.

It hides a person identity, captures that whole genre of horror and suspense to know who it is. Something about gas masks always seems to creep people out. It was a simple and easy decision to make to add it into our film.

Opening Titles

Opening titles

With out film being set in the genre of horror, I believe that for our opening titles we should have something slightly odd in order for it to stand out. Many horror opening titles hold articles from newspapers relating to parts of the film. In my opinion I believe our film would look really good with something like that. for example...

Here is the opening titles to the film Texas Chainsaw Massacre- the beginning. It includes images such as deformed children and articles like I previously motioned. It fits with the film and helps to set the film before it has even begun.

Another opening sequence to a horror that I think will fit for our film would be the purge. Again it explains slightly what the purge is. I think it would be really affective for if we used things like this to help set the scene.

Both opening titles are using dark, amber colour's again something I would like to use for ours. It links in with horror from the darkness used and the amber colour's help to detect fire and danger.

The arm...

A short scene in our movie involves a shocking viewing of a victims arm, for this we hope to use makeup and pint to create a gruesome shocking look and in hope to make in look real and believable.
